Verna Mae (Rice) Melvin passed away at her home on Friday, February 28 following a long illness, just shy of her 90th birthday.
She was born on March 5, 1930 to the late Rev. John B. and Willa A. Heaberlin Rice of Wurtland.
Verna was an LPN for 15 years on 2 East at Kings’s Daughter’s Hospital until 1976. She was a faithful member of the Wurtland Church of the Nazarene and served as a Sunday School teacher, pianist, organist and singer. She enjoyed reading and gardening and entertaining in her home. She was a wonderful cook and known for her chicken and dumplings.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Earl Elmo “Moe” Melvin, of Wurtland; three daughters: Ginger (Mike) Estep of Ormond Beach FL, Penny (Roger) Kincaid of Columbus OH, Pepper (Tom) Stinson of Maysville KY, and one son, Rev. Steve (Shawn) Melvin of Mayfield, KY; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister, Britta (Bill) Bridges of Mt. Vernon OH, and a brother, Paul (Elani) Rice of Cincinnati OH.
Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Carman Funeral Home with Dr. Scott Hill, Dr. Tom Melvin and Rev. Steve Melvin officiating.
Visitation will be after 11:00 a.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
