Sandra Diane Akers (née Hicks), 71, of Flatwoods, KY passed away on January 24th 2023 at home, after several years of declining health. Sandra was born in Ashland, KY to (the late) John D. Hicks (Jill) and Ora (née Holland). She completed her Eighth Grade Diploma at Russell Independent School 1965.
Sandra is preceded in death by her first husband Jackie Smith; her former partner Rex Hall; two children, Kendra “Kendy” Smith and Jonathan “Jon” Hall; grandson Matthew “Tyler” Perkins; sister Melinda “Linda” Gwinn (née Hicks).
She was a proud member of the United Steelworkers Union, where she was part of the working class, with good pay, ensuring her ability to raise her family. As a Woman of Steel, Sandra did “man’s work” and was tough as nails. She then went on to help build our nations “Information Superhighway” as a fiber optic line installer. She was a pioneer for women laborers, gender equality and empowerment of women in these fields.
Sandra loved animals, especially horses and dogs. She enjoyed a “spunky” horse, trail riding, live music and dancing. She was a free spirit, straight shooter and would give the shirt off her back to help someone.
Surviving are her three Daughters’ Christy Perkins, Tammy Brown and Dixie Hall; 8 grandchildren, Mark “Christopher”, Kristen, Dustin, Coty, Kyle, McKayla, Taylor and Logan; plus 5 great-grandchildren; Brothers’ Danny (Rose née Sterckle), Randal (Rhonda, Alma), Ronnie, Ricky and sister Pamela Thompson (née Hicks).
Committal service will be on Friday, February 17, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
