Shirley was employed at various banks and credit agencies during her career. Her hobbies included raising tropical fish, selling Sarah Coventry jewelry, making ceramic crafts, and raising flowers.

After retirement, they moved to Jupiter, FL in 1986.  Her favorite place to relax and reflect was the Inlet near her home, where she spent hours gathering shells and watching sunsets.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Chester E. Strother, Jr; daughters Linda Lee Strother; Judy (Mike) Flack, her son Paul Strother (Robin Iver); her brother in law, James (Linda) Strother, Sister In Law, Brenda Strother, nieces Rebecca Aldammad, Kelli Turley, Kim Strother, Kristen Adkins, Peggy  Moore and Rose Reeder; and nephews Robert Reeder, Jr.; Mike Strother and Joe Strother; grandchildren Wes Mullins, Kandria Long, Brian Flack, Lauren Thomas, Tiffany Riddle, Nicole Vargas, Samantha Gordon, and Carly Iver; and 10 great grandchildren.
