Joyce Johnson

September 7, 1942 ~ June 1, 2021 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Tribute

Joyce Ann Johnson, 78, of Ashland, passed away June 1, 2021 in Ashland Community Hospice Care Center, surrounded by her daughter, son-in-law, and sister.

Ms. Johnson was born September 7, 1942 in Ashland, to the late Edna Waugh Bryant and Chester Wells.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Johnson, and one daughter, Terrie Lynn Johnson.

Joyce was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. In 1972, Rose Hill started a mission in Flatwoods, KY: Grace Baptist Church, where she was a founding member. Joyce served in many capacities at Grace over the years; teaching Sunday School, Mission Friends, and Bible School, just to name a few. Joyce loved her church family, and would brag on them whenever an opportunity arose.

In her earlier years, Joyce was actively involved in Eastern Star and the El Hasa Shriners. In her later years, she found great joy and friendship in a collective group of people. Every day, they met at McDonald’s for breakfast, and J&J’s for dinner. Joyce was often the source of entertainment with her jokes and contagious laughter.

Joyce had a unique and special relationship with her sister, Paula Fannin. Paula was the first person Joyce called in the morning. They often spent each day eating out, attending church, and reminiscing on childhood memories.

Joyce’s only remaining living daughter, Cheryl Brown, was her pride and joy. At any given opportunity, Joyce loved to talk and tell stories about Cheryl growing up. Later in life, Cheryl, and her husband, Mike, became Joyce’s greatest advocates. Joyce referred to Mike as her “sunshine”, and to Cheryl as “the Warden”.

Joyce could almost always find humor in every situation, and will be greatly missed by her close friends and family. Two life-long friends who were especially special to Joyce, were Donna Sherman and William Dillion.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, June 4, 2021, at First Pentecostal Church in Flatwoods: 1110 Bellefonte Rd., Flatwoods, KY 41139, with visitation beginning at noon with Rev. Marvin Boggs and Rev. William Dilloin officiating. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
