JoAnn Carter, 81, of Russell, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018, in King’s Daughters Medical Center, surrounded by her loving husband and family.

Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 19, 1936, in Oak Hill, W.Va., to the late James and Claudine Weeks Ellison.

JoAnn was of the Christian Faith and a member of Bridges Christian Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. She enjoyed golfing, dancing and playing cards. She is a graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill and Marshall University with a degree in reading and Physical Education. She retired from South Point School System after 25 years of Service. She taught reading and coached girl’s track and field, with many winning seasons for 10 years.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leonard Carter Jr.; two sons, Leonard F. “Joe” Carter III of Rolla, Missouri and James Ray Carter of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Carter Chafin of St. Louis, Missouri, Kory Hinton Carter of St. Louis, Missouri, Madison Renee Carter of East Hampton, Connecticut and Allison Rae Carter of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; one brother, James Ray Ellison Jr. of Waterloo South Carolina; two sisters, Janice Lee Ellison Reed of Blacksburg, Virginia and Donna Rae Ellison Davis of South Orange, New Jersey; four niece and nephews, Kelly Suzanne Stanley, Richard Lee Reed, Thomas Wayne Davis and Todd Anthony Davis; and her four legged companion, Brier, who saw her through many tough years of medical conditions.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be 3 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2108, in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bridges Christian Church, 1402 Kenwood Drive, Russell, KY.
