Harold Edward “Ed” Maggard of Wurtland passed away in Community Hospice on October 5 after a long and courageous battle with heart disease. Ed was born on January 13, 1934, in Wurtland, to the late Alfred and Bessie Braden Maggard.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Billie Jo Bryant Maggard in 1994.  He was pre-deceased by two brothers and six sisters:  Robert Maggard, Aldean Morrison, Kathleen Ussery, James Maggard, Shirley Stith, Alfreda Henson, Virginia Franz, and Janice Watson.

Ed graduated in 1952 from Wurtland High School, where he was a star athlete in multiple sports.  He was a retired roll turner at AK Steel.  Ed was a member of the Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church, attended Greenup Presbyterian Church, and was an Old Regular Baptist by heart.

He is survived by two brothers and one sister:  Alfred “Butch” Maggard, Debby Johnson, and Norman “Bo” Maggard.  Cherishing memories of their father are his three daughters:  Vickie (Jeffrey) Elswick, Pamela (Ray) Gillum, and Rebecca Snyder.  Ed was blessed with four grandchildren:  Holly Gillum, Blake (Amanda) Gillum, Alexis (Leon) Mattingly, and Whitney (Jason) Franklin.  He was further blessed with eight great-grandchildren:  Celia Monte, Blakely Monte, Carson Gillum, Camrynn Gillum, Harper Music, Adrian Mattingly, Corabelle Gillum, and Shepherd Franklin.  He is also survived by three step-grandchildren,  Matthew Snyder, Haley Snyder, and Nick Snyder, and a step-great-grandson, Nathan Mattingly.  He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Throughout his life, Ed enjoyed gardening and participating in a variety of sports:  football, basketball, softball, hunting, fishing, and golf.  His favorite place was his home, and his greatest love was reserved for his faith and his family.  He was known for his hard work, gentle nature, and humble approach in all things.  “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” Proverbs 20:7
