Tribute

Mrs. Geraldine "Jerry" Garthee Townsend, 84, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 5th, 2019 in Lexington.

Geraldine was born December 12th, 1934 in Greenup, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Clyde Garthee and Opal Sturgill Garthee. Geraldine had an older sister, the late Wanda Jean Garthee Colley, an older brother, the late Jack Garthee, and a younger brother, Danny Bill Garthee.

Geraldine attended Greenup High School.  In 1954 Geraldine married a soldier, James F. Townsend of Kitts Hill, Ohio, and traveled with him around the world until they retired to Griffin, Georgia in 1972.  James passed away in 1994 and Geraldine moved back to Kentucky where she bought a home and settled near brother, Danny Bill, in Nicholasville.

Together, James and Geraldine raised two children, son Stephen James Townsend, an Army officer stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, and daughter, Cara Diane Townsend Cook, an educator living in Zebulon, Georgia. Geraldine enjoyed watching grandsons, Tyler and Evan Townsend, and granddaughter, Lauren Cook, grow up into happy, active and productive adults.  She was thrilled to meet great-granddaughter, Faye, and happy to hear of the recent birth of great-grandson, Wyatt.

Geraldine was a long-time member of Providence Baptist Church in Williamson, Georgia.

She is survived by brother Danny Bill of Nicholasville; daughter Cara and her husband Chris, of Zebulon, Georgia; granddaughter Lauren Cook, of Montrose, Colorado; son Stephen and his wife Melissa of Stuttgart, Germany;  grandson Tyler, his wife Alex and great granddaughter, Faye of Fort Drum, New York; grandson Evan, his wife Katie and great grandson, Wyatt of Grosslichten, Germany; nephew James Gray of Florida and his children and grand-children; as well as niece Theosa Garthee Hoffeld of Lexington.
