Connie Sue Flannery Mauk, 66, died April 22, 2021, at her home in Wurtland, Ky.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell Flannery and Mary Flannery Kleykamp; her stepfather, Dr. Paul Kleykamp; and her stepbrother, Dr. Paul Kleykamp Jr.
Connie was born Nov. 9, 1954, in Ashland and grew up in Flatwoods. She attended Russell High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Connie beautifully intertwined her two lifelong passions, family and teaching. She was a teacher and preschool director before deciding to stay home to raise her children, whom she home-schooled through high school. At church, her versatile skills served multiple age groups that she taught at the same time, from children to young adults to older adults. She was a children’s minister for many years and later taught Bible study classes at Christ Temple Church in Huntington, W.Va., where she was a member and very active in the ladies’ ministry.
A minister introduced Connie to her husband, Bryan, who was living in Texas at the time. They were pen pals at first, then began a long-distance relationship. Bryan proposed to Connie on a cruise ship in a romance straight out of the movies, and no two people ever loved each other more. They would have been married 35 years in June.
In recent years, Connie’s world revolved around her three grandsons, who called her Nana. She enjoyed crafting and being a grandmother in her close-knit family with strong, traditional values of togetherness. Blessed with compassion and empathy, Connie was always giving everything she had to help someone else. If there was an opportunity to give, she would give in abundance.
Survivors include her husband, Bryan Mauk; her daughters, Megan Lykins (Jason) and Mary Mauk; grandchildren, Elijah, Noah and Malachi; her stepsister, Linda Kleykamp; and her stepbrother, David Kleykamp.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christ Temple Church Zambia missions, 2400 Johnstown Road, Huntington, WV 25701 or www.ctcwv.com.
