Comilas Franklin Melvin, 72, of Raceland, passed away Monday, February 22, 2021 at Community Hospice, following a five year battle with renal cancer.

He was born on June 21, 1948, in Ashland, Kentucky, to the late William and Dorothy Brumfield Melvin.  He is preceded in death by his parents, having lost both at the young age of 8 years old.

Frank was a 1966 graduate of Raceland High School.  He excelled in basketball, as all-state honorable mention, all-district, all-regional, and was part of the NEKC tournament team his senior year.  Frank also played football, baseball, ran track, and was President of his student council.  He continued sports at the college level, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and Rank I certification in Education from Morehead State University.  Then went on to pursue his doctorate from the University of Kentucky.

Following college, Frank spent several years living and working in both Colorado and Florida, before moving back to Kentucky.  He started his teaching career at Carter County Schools in 1985.  He then transferred to Raceland Independent School System, where he held several administrative positions before retiring as Superintendent in 2012.  Frank was a member of the Greenup Christian Church.  He enjoyed golfing and attending/supporting all Raceland academic and sports activities.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Pamela Cooke Melvin; two daughters Laura M. Lewis and Leslie M. Boardman; one brother Greg (Marty) Melvin; one sister Sandy (Ron) Clark; and many extended family.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021, at noon, at Carman Funeral Home, Flatwoods; Rev. Mike Dennis will officiate.  A private family burial will follow.
